Amazon RDS comes in a variety of database types - optimized for memory, performance, or I/O - and gives you a choice of six familiar database engines, including Amazon Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle Database, and SQL database. You can use AWS Database Migration Service to easily migrate or copy your existing databases to Amazon RDS.

Easy Management

Amazon RDS makes it easy to move from design to deployment. Use the Amazon RDS Management Console, the AWS RDS command line interface, or simple API calls to access production-ready relational database capabilities in minutes. No database infrastructure or software installation and maintenance required.

The storage resources can be scaled easily and there is no need of downtime for the purpose. All these things done can be done through a few mouse clicks or with the help of APIs. Many Amazon RDS machine types allow you to run one or more read replicas to offload read traffic from the primary database software instance.

Available and Sustainable

The infrastructure on which Amazon RDS runs is the same as the one used by other Amazon Web Services. By providing a Multi-AZ DB Instance, Amazon RDS synchronously replicates data to a backup instance in another Availability Zone (AZ). Amazon RDS has many other features that increase the reliability of production critical databases, including automatic backups, database snapshots, and automatic host replacement.


Amazon RDS supports the most demanding database applications. You can choose between two SSD-based storage options: one optimized for high-performance OLTP applications and the other for general purpose, low-cost storage. In addition, Amazon Aurora offers performance comparable to commercial databases at one-tenth the price.


Amazon RDS makes it easy to control access to your database network. Amazon RDS also allows you to run your database instances in an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), which allows you to isolate your database instances and connect to your existing IT infrastructure through a standard encrypted IPsec VPN. Many Amazon RDS machine types offer both encryption at rest and encryption in transit.

The Amazon Relational Database Service is a highly reliable service, and runs on the same infrastructure as Amazon Web Services, which are generally very reliable. Amazon Relational Database Service can replicate data from a multi-zone database instance to a completely different availability zone, which is a backup instance. Other features that make Amazon Relational Database Service more desirable include machine backups, database snapshots, and frivolous host swaps.


Amazon Relational Database Service is managed an easy way allowing you to move from the design phase to the execution phase. This can be done using the AWS Management Console, API calls, or simply the AWS RDS interface, which requires command entry.

AWS RDS provides a reserved IOPS (PIOPS) capacity for fast, consistent and predictable I/O performance. This is ideal for online transaction processing (OLTP) or I/O-centric applications. Up to around 29,000 IOPS or more can be configured for MySQL RDS. The more IOPS configured, the more concurrent requests are processed, which increases performance and reduces latency for better database performance.


AWS RDS offers two backup mechanisms that are very easy to configure.

  • Automatic Backup

This feature automatically creates a full daily snapshot of the database data. It also logs transaction logs and all updates to the RDS database.

  • On-site snapshots

Snapshots of the RDS database are triggered by the user. Unlike automatic backups, which are performed once a day, scheduled snapshots can be started as often as desired. They are usually useful for backing up existing database files, for example before a major release or application upgrade.

After reviewing some of the key features of RDS, we have seen how AWS effectively handles some of the time- and resource-intensive database management activities.

Simplicity of deployment

Amazon RDS allows you to create, delete and modify database instances using the AWS management console or a set of APIs. You have full control over instance access and security, and a simple process for managing database backups and snapshots.

Amazon RDS for MySQL instances have pre-configured parameters and settings that are tailored to the instance type you select. No need to worry, however, because you can easily control these parameters with database configuration groups that provide detailed control and configuration options for database instances.


With Amazon Cloudwatch RDS monitoring features, all metrics for DB RDS instances are available at no additional cost. CloudWatch Enhanced Monitoring offers more detailed and in-depth monitoring capabilities, providing access to more than 50 CPU, memory, file system, and disk I/O metrics.
